Daniel Keatings was an Olympic finalist in Beijing

Gymnast Daniel Keatings was surprised to land a major accolade at the BBC East sports awards, because he did not even know he had been nominated.

The 18-year-old from Corby, who reached the men's all-round final at the Beijing Olympics, was named Young Personality of the Year.

"My coach told me to come along as a guest," he told BBC Radio Northampton.

"Then I found out I was up for an award, and to hear my name read out as the winner was amazing," he added.

"You win lots of medals, but there are lots of other people who do the same.

"So to get an award like this is really like winning a major competition."

Keatings will compete this weekend in the World Cup Finals, being staged in Madrid.
