Tyrone's Owen Mulligan attempts to burst clear from Dessie Mone

Philip Jordan's goal helped Tyrone lead 1-5 to 0-1 early on but Monaghan fought back to trail 1-8 to 0-7 at half-time.

Tyrone then extended their lead to 1-13 to 0-8 but Thomas Freeman's 51st-minute goal spurred Monaghan's fightback.

John Devine saved a Vincent Corey goal chance while Corey also blasted a great last-ditch goal effort over the bar.

Owen Mulligan's tussle with Vincent Corey was the main feature of the early stages and the Tyrone forward helped engineer his side's opening two scores with the Cookstown man himself and Colm McCullagh pointing frees.

McCullagh then added another score after a superb flowing move and it then got even better for the Red Hand County in the sixth minute.

Philip Jordan charged upfield right through the heart of the Monaghan defence and he was able to palm the ball into the net after playing a clever one-two with Gerard Cavlan.

Monaghan got the score that they badly needed seconds later when Stephen Gollogley fired over from play.

Mulligan's tussle with Corey yielded another free for the Cookstown man in the ninth minute and Cavanagh then stormed upfield to knock over another score from play for Mickey Harte's side.

Monaghan looked in real trouble at that stage but to their credit, they replied with late inclusion Paul Finlay and Ciaran Hanratty both knocking over scores for the Farney men to cut Tyrone's lead to five.

McCullagh pointed another free for Tyrone in the 15th minute but Monaghan were growing in confidence and they hit three of the next four scores to cut Tyrone's lead to 1-7 to 0-6 by the 27th minute.

All those Monaghan scores came from play with Rory Woods, Finlay and Eoin Lennon supplying the finishes.

Thomas Freeman's goal spurred Monaghan's fightback

However, Colm McCullagh's accuracy from frees was proving a boon for Tyrone and his 30th-minute point increased his side's lead to five.

But Finlay had the final scoring say of the first half with his free cutting Tyrone's lead to 1-8 to 0-7 at the interval.

After struggling in the closing stages of the first half, Tyrone regrouped at the break and they hit five of the next six scores to take apparent control of the game at 1-13 to 0-8.

Tyrone's points in that period dominance included fisted efforts from McCullagh and defender Dermot Carlin.

However, Monaghan refused to throw in the towel and after Paul Finlay's point got them scoring again, they were suddenly only four points adrift when Thomas Freeman squeezed a close-range goal shot past Devine.

The superb Sean Cavanagh responded with another Tyrone point but Monaghan kept pressing and suddenly the Red Hand team appeared rattled.

Two more Freeman points left a kick of the ball between the sides (1-14 to 1-11) with five minutes left.

By this stage, Monaghan were rampant and John Devine had to make a brilliant save to deny Corey's close-range goal attempt.

Monaghan had other chances to score points and perhaps if they had shown a little more composure in the closing stages, they might have been able to peg back Tyrone's lead without being forced to go for goal.

But inevitably, they did get another goal chance in injury-time after Rory Woods had found the unmarked Corey.

However, the defender-turned attacker blasted the ball over from close range and Monaghan's last chance had gone.
