Ryan McMenamin has been troubled by a chest infection |
Ireland boss Peter McGrath has played down fears over Ryan McMenamin's fitness for Friday's International Rules First Test against Australia. The Tyrone defender has been troubled by a chest infection over the past week but he was able to train with the Irish squad on Monday.
"His infection is leaving him but the dregs of it are still there," said the Irish manager.
"Hopefully, he'll be able to take a full part in tomorrow's session."
Meanwhile, Tyrone boss Mickey Harte has said Sean Cavanagh's decision to turn down an AFL contract could have "significant repercussions" for GAA.
"Sean Cavanagh has had a contract waved in his face and still sees that Gaelic games is the place to be," said Harte.
The Tyrone boss, an outspoken critic of the hybrid game, urged the GAA to take the initiative now to protect its finest young sportsmen from attempts to lure them to Australia.
"I think it's a really big decision for Gaelic footballers, and I hope that it's followed up by further actions by the GAA.
"It's a great relief for me, I think it's a great decision."
Cavanagh was offered a two-year deal by the Brisbane Lions.
Meanwhile, Australian coach Kevin Sheedy has a number of injury worries ahead of the first test.
Brad Deledio (shoulder), Troy Makepeace (thigh strain) and Heath Black (ankle) have picked up knocks but all three are expected to play in Friday's first Test at the Subiaco Oval.
Adelaide's Andrew McLeod and Brisbane's Chris Johnson have become the first Aboriginal players to captain Australia after they were named as co-captains for the series.
The Irish squad arrived in Australia on Sunday evening.
They will not be playing any practice matches ahead of the opener as they are afraid of sustaining injuries.
