Brown sixth in Poland
Zoe Brown's NI record is 4.26m
Zoe Brown produced a creditable performance in Poland
Antrim pole vaulter Zoe Brown finished a creditable sixth in her event at the Spar European Cup in Poland.

The Loughborough-based athlete cleared 3.90m which was .36 down on her personal best set earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Ireland had a good first day at the Europa Cup meeting in Iceland with both the men and women in second place going into Sunday's action.

If the Irish squads can stay in the top two, they will earn promotion to the First League.

Competing for the British team in Bydgoszcz, Brown went into the event as the lowest ranked athlete so her sixth place in the eight-strong event was a solid performance.

Anzhela Balakhonova of the Ukraine won the event with 4.50m ahead of local athlete Monika Pyrek.

Northern Ireland's other representative in the British team, James McIlroy competes in the men's 800m on Sunday.

After the opening day of action in Reykjavik, Norway, on 62 points, lead the Irish woman by a point with Austria on 57 points.

Paul Brizzel

Estonia lead the men's table on 61 points - four ahead of Ireland with Denmark (55) and Cyprus (50) the other main challengers.

The Irish men will feel as though they should be in the lead as they earned no points in the men's 4x100m relay after a mix-up involving Paul Brizzel and Tom Comyns.

Ballymena & Antrim club athlete Ian Neely produced a decent performance by taking third in the 400m hurdles in a time of 53.02.

Dunloy sprinter Anna Boyle took fifth in the women's 100m in 11.79 which was another creditable performance while another Ulster athlete Erin Kinnear earned useful points for a fourth place in 3.60.

Boyle then helped the Irish women claim a fine victory in the women's relay in a time of 45.78.

Irish winners included 400m runners Karen Shinkins (52.83) and Rob Daly (46.98) while Daniel Caulfield produced a fine tactical run to win the men's 1500m in 3:45.

Other first day results included second places for Ger O'Donoghue (100m 10.55), Darragh O'Farrell (long jump 7.28m), Roisin McGettigan (3000m 9.17.68) and Roman Linscheid (hammer 69.02) plus thirds for Michelle Carey (400m hurdles 59.85), Maura Prendeville (800m 2.06), Taneisha Robinson-Scanlon (triple jump 12.90m), Ruairi O'Briain (pole vault 4.60m) and Vinny Mulvey (5000m).

Fionnuala Britton took fourth in the 3000m steeplechase in 10.37.56 while Eileen O'Keeffe was sixth in the discus with a best throw of 39.56m.
