Promoter Barry Hearn criticised Magee's last fight |
Belfast's Brian Magee seeks to return to top form when he defends his IBO super-middleweight title against Joe Calzaghe victim Miguel Jiminez on Saturday night in Huddersfield.
The former amateur star has laboured in recent outings and earned a ticking-off from his promoter Barry Hearn.
But he remains unbeaten in 17 fights and has the incentive of succeeding where Calzaghe failed and stopping the American.
Jiminez was negative against the Welshman in what was his last fight in August but survived the 12 rounds comfortably.
He is likely to be more positive at this lower level.
A win against Jiminez can unlock the door to bigger fights |
Magee said: "I know this is going to be a tough fight but I believe that my speed will be the key.
"He likes to stand in close and have a fight so I've got to keep it at long range, land and get out of the way.
"He showed against Calzaghe that he's a tough fighter but I'm determined to show my best and a win against him can unlock the door to bigger fights".
The main fight at Huddersfield Sports Centre features James Hare defending his Commonwealth welterweight title against Frans Hantindi.
Also on the undercard is Dale Robinson who challenges Spencer Matsangura for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title.
