In his last fight Barrera beat friend Johnny Tapia on points |
World featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera will fight New Yorker Kevin Kelley in Las Vegas on 12 April. Barrera has beaten the best in the division, including a famous victory over Naseem Hamed, but he will not officially be defending a title.
The Mexican is taking a stand against the sport's governing bodies and has turned down belts in the past.
The "Baby-faced Assassin" is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, and Kelley is not expected to provide much of a challenge.
But Kelley who lost a memorable scrap with Hamed in 1997, despite dumping him on the canvas four times, is ready to get back in the ring.
"I've learned that when an opportunity comes around you've got to give your absolute best," the 35-year-old said.
"I have taken time off from the ring to put myself in a position of hunger for a new challenge.
"Barrera has given me that challenge and opportunity, and boxing fans will be surprised come April."
