McKee chases world standard
Paul McKee will run in his native city next month
Paul McKee set his Irish record of 45.62 last summer
Belfast 400 metre runner Paul McKee will make another attempt in Germany on Friday to achieve the qualifying time for next month's World Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

Running his first indoor race in four years, McKee "went off far too hard" in Sunday's invitational 400m at the Norwich Union meeting in Glasgow.

The Irish outdoor record-holder finished second behind Russian Aleksander Rudnitskiy in a time of 47.68 - .78 outside the world indoor standard.

"I got a little carried away with a 21.5 first lap which gave me a huge lead but soon felt the effects and tied up badly, eventually coming to a walk over the line," McKee told BBC Sport Online.

The Belfast runner hopes better pace judgement in Friday's international meeting in Chemnitz will enable him to achieve the qualifying standard.

Meanwhile, Ballymena runner Paul Brizzel did his chances of earning selection for the world indoors a power of good by setting a new Irish 200m record over the weekend.

Paul Brizzel will run over 60m in Cardiff this weekend
Paul Brizzel: Set Irish indoor record

Brizzel chipped .07 off Gary Ryan's previous record when clocking 21.06 at a UK series meeting in Birmingham.

Ryan had a good view of Brizzel's run as he took second behind the northerner in the race with a time of 21.30.

Later in the afternoon, Ryan clocked a useful 47.77 when running his first ever indoor 400m.

Brizzel will run over 60m in Cardiff this weekend when Irish long jumper Ciaran McDonagh will make an overdue return to competitive action.

McDonagh became the first Irishman to break the eight-metre barrier in 1999 when he set that exact distance when placing ninth in the World Outdoor Championships in Seville.

Meanwhile, Ireland's new middle-distance find Alistair Cragg achieved a notable scalp at the weekend when he defeated Olympic 1500m champion Noah Ngeny in the US.

South African-born Cragg won the 3000m at the Boston Indoor meeting.

He clocked 7:45.22 which left him .99 ahead of Kenya's Ngeny.

In the same race, Belfast's Gareth Turnbull could only finish 15th in a disappointing time of 8:09.97.
