Before heading off for a Christmas break in the sun, Whistle got the injury-prone Canadian-born Thornton to sign on the dotted line. The 29-year-old centre hails from Gloucester, Ontario, and emerged from a successful college career with the Boston University Terriers. He also played for the IHL's Peoria Rivermen, Austrian side Klagenfurt, the Mannheim Eagles and the Cardiff Devils. "He has had a tough time with injury, but he's passed every physical he's taken,'' said Whistle before heading to Lanzarote.
"He missed a big chunk of last season and has yet to play this season, but he's fully recovered. ''He's in great shape and he can't wait to get back on the ice doing what he does best scoring and making goals. "He's got points wherever he's played and he just wants the chance to continue doing that. ''He's a very skilful player, a real team player and a true asset. I've been trying to sign him for the last three years.'' Thorton has a British passport and has played for GB in the World Championships. He hopes to make his debut on Friday, 28 December against the Bracknell Bees at the Odyssey. | See also: 16 Dec 02 | Other Sports 13 Dec 02 | N Ireland 08 Dec 02 | N Ireland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
