Donnelly fifth in Irish trials
Dernot Donnelly is regaining his old form
Dermot Donnelly fifth in Cork on Sunday
Dermot Donnelly will have to wait before discovering whether he has earned a place in the European Cross-Country Championships next month.

The Belfast athlete finished in fifth place at the Irish trials in Cork on Sunday, but it still may not be enough to guarantee a place.

The Irish selectors will pick a six-man squad for the event in Croatia on Tuesday.

Keith Kelly has been pre-selected but there is a doubt over the Drogheda man's fitness.

The selectors will also see how South African-born Alistair Cragg performs in Monday's NCAA Cross-Country Championships in the US.

Clare's Seamus Power won Sunday's Irish Intercounties Championship for the eighth successive time followed by Fiachra Lombard with Mark Kenneally in third.

McKiernan seventh

Leevale's Cathal Lombard pipped Donnelly for fourth place with Cork's Martin McCarthy in sixth.

Another Northern Ireland athlete Eddie McGinley had to pull out of the junior event after complaining of stomach pains.

Ann Keenan-Buckley won the women's race ahead of Maria McCambridge and Sinead Delahunty.

Meanwhile, 33-year-old Catherina McKiernan, action again after a three-year absence because of injury, finished in seventh place in a low-key event in Belgium.

The former London Marathon winner, who gave birth to a daughter last March, has been troubled by injury.
