![]() | Saturday, 16 February, 2002, 17:54 GMT Donnelly out of World Cross Country ![]() Donnelly is now aiming for the Commonwealth Games Dermot Donnelly has given up hope of competing at next month's World Cross Country Championships in Dublin. Donnelly missed Saturday's Northern Ireland Cross Country Championships after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury which has troubled him over the past two months. The Annadale Strider did resume training a week ago and hoped to compete in the Northern Ireland Championship in Coleraine. However, he felt pain again in the knee in Thursday and he received a cortisone injection on Friday morning. "The World Cross Country Championships are now out the window for me," Donnelly told BBC Sport Online.
"The target now is to get myself right for the Commonwealth Games in the summer. "But time is running out for me as I really wanted to get a good winter in so that I could qualify for the Commonwealth Games. "I'll be trying to get the Commonwealth 5000m standard. "I can forget about trying to get the 10K standard as I simply haven't been able to put in the work over the winter. "It's all very depressing," added Donnelly. Meanwhile, Willowfield's Gary McLernon won Saturday's Northern Ireland Championship.
McLernon finished ahead of Brian Conway and Stephen Cairns. Meanwhile, Larne man James McIlroy will be in action in Sunday's Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix meeting at Birmingham. McIlroy will never get a better chase to chase a fast time indoors as his opposition is schedule to include current World Outdoor Champion Andre Bucher, world record-holder Wilson Kipketer and Russian star Yuriy Borzahovskiy. 1996 Olympic silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng is also down to compete in the race. McIlroy is aiming to achieve the European Indoor Championship 800m standard of 1:49.00. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Northern Ireland stories: Links to more Northern Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
