| Thursday, 7 November, 2002, 12:36 GMT Tyrone contenders revealed ![]() Liam Donnelly is the current Tyrone minor manager The identity of the two mystery candidates for the vacant Tyrone management post has been revealed. Former Derry star Peter Doherty and Tyrone minor manager Liam Donnelly have joined the race to take over from Art McRory and Eugene McKenna who were stood down last month. Interviews for the position are expected to begin on Thursday evening. Doherty now lives in Omagh and has extensive experience in managing club sides within Tyrone including a spell at Carrickmore. Trillick man Donnelly guided the Red Hands to All Ireland triumph at Under 18 level last year. They join the outgoing Eugene McKenna, Tyrone U21 boss Mickey Harte and Ballinderry's All Ireland winning manager Brian McIver as potential successors to McKenna and Art McRory.
Harte has indicated that he would want to work with his regular partner Father Gerard McAleer while McIver would also have a strong backroom team. McIver has already said that he would work with Carrickmore's Raymond Munroe, Gortin's Roger Keenan and current Rock manager Peter Bayne. It is also likely that McIver would bring in the expertise of the highly-respected Ballinderry man Dessie Ryan. The reign of McRory and McKenna came to a shock end last month. Tyrone's county board refused to grant a request from the management duo that McKenna should take the reins himself for a couple of months. McKenna odds-on McRory has been suffering from a viral condition and had been told by his doctors to take a break until Christmas in the hope of recovering from the illness. Despite the Tyrone county board's decision last month, McKenna has now emerged as the favourite to be installed as sole team boss. A number of Tyrone bookies make McKenna odds-on favourite to be given the job. A five-man committee will conduct the interview process before making a recommendation to the county's clubs which would almost certainly be rubber-stamped. | See also: 06 Nov 02 | N Ireland 26 Oct 02 | BBC Pundits 23 Oct 02 | Sports Talk Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
