| Sunday, 27 October, 2002, 13:51 GMT Dougherty linked with Antrim job ![]() Brian White led Antrim to the Ulster semi-final in 2000 Gerry Dougherty has become the latest name to be linked with the vacant Antrim football job. Dougherty has been in charge of the Down U21 team for the past two seasons and managed the Mourne County's All-Ireland minor winning team in 1999. He has been asked to stay on for another season as Down U21 boss but it is understood that he is unhappy at the resources which the county board are prepared to offer the underage hopefuls. Dougherty told the Sunday Independent that he had yet to accept the Down offer. He acknowledged that he had been approached by Antrim officials about the Saffron county vacancy.
"In the last few days, I have had a number of discussions with (Antrim chairman) Joe O'Boyle," said Dougherty. "I can confirm that the subject of conversations was about the Antrim vacancy". If Dougherty does decide to take the Antrim job, Barry Breen, who has worked with him in recent years, would almost certainly also link up with the Saffron county. Antrim have been looking for a successor to Brian White who stepped down after the county's Championship defeat by Westmeath in June. Former Down boss Peter McGrath, ex-Derry backroom man Damian Cassidy and Armagh man John Rafferty all turned down approaches from the Antrim county board. Ex-Armagh manager Father Sean Hegarty was also in contention before being ruled out because of ill health. | See also: 26 Oct 02 | BBC Pundits 15 Oct 02 | N Ireland 08 Jun 02 | N Ireland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
