Hegarty denies Antrim link
Father Sean Hegarty is in line to take over from Brian White who stepped down in June

Former Armagh football boss Father Sean Hegarty has denied reports that he is about to become the new Antrim manager.

It was believed on Monday evening that the Tyrone-based priest was set to take over the Saffron post and that he would be officially appointed on Wednesday night.

But Hegarty has said that he will definitely not be taking the job.

"I haven't been to a match in two or three years," Hegarty told the Irish News.

"Certainly, I would be interested in seeing Antrim doing well because I think Belfast and the Antrim county needs a lift.

"But, at the moment, I would not be in a position to take the job."

Antrim have been looking for a successor to Brian White who stepped down after Antrim's Championship defeat by Westmeath in June.

Father Hegarty had two stints as Armagh manager in the 1970s and '80s and also managed Derry for a year in the early 1990s.

His longest spell as Armagh boss was between 1983/88 when Eamon Coleman served as his assistant.

During that period, Hegarty's Armagh team were beaten in the 1984 and '87 Ulster finals.

He also guided Armagh to the 1985 National League final where they were defeated by Monaghan.

Former Down boss Peter McGrath, ex-Armagh player John Rafferty and Damien Cassidy have been among the men linked with the vacant Saffron job.
