The BBC understands that the Maghera man has accepted a nomination from several Derry clubs to be put forward for the position. Nominations close next Wednesday and if other candidates are not put forward by clubs, then Moran could be installed in the role as early as the following evening. A Derry source has told the BBC that Moran has made it clear he is keen to take on the role. He is now an overwhelming favourite for the job.
Tony Scullion and Damian Barton were also mentioned as possible candidates but may opt out of the race now that Moran's has agreed to put his name forward. Moran has been favoured to succeed Eamon Coleman since quitting as Donegal manager last month. The Derry native stepped down from the Donegal role after the county's All-Ireland Quarter-Final replay defeat by Dublin. He previously took charge of Derry in late 1994 after Eamon Coleman's first reign as Derry boss had ended in controversial circumstances. Moran led the county to the 1995 National Football League title but his brief reign was affected by internal wrangles with a number of players unhappy at Coleman's sacking. Moran quit after Derry's Ulster semi-final defeat by Tyrone later that year. | See also: 10 Oct 02 | N Ireland 09 Oct 02 | N Ireland 12 Sep 02 | N Ireland Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
