Youngster Sweetman is new Brummie

Sweetman impressed riding at Perry Barr for the Isle of Wight last season

Australian teenager Richard Sweetman has agreed to ride for the Birmingham Brummies next summer.

The 18-year-old joins the Perry Barr club on a season-long loan from Elite League side Swindon.

Grand Prix star Leigh Adams advised Sweetman that the Brummies would be a good stepping stone for him.

"He had a host of other club showing an interest in him but Leigh suggested we would be a good club to join," said Brummies boss Graham Drury.

"Leigh was impressed with the professionalism of Birmingham Speedway when we hosted the Elite League Riders' Championship."

Sweetman has already caught the eye riding at Perry Barr, scoring 10 points on his first visit during this year's loan spell with the Isle of Wight. And Drury was more than happy to follow Adams' recommendation to sign his fellow Australian.

"He feels the lad has what it takes to go all the way in the sport and he had a good season with the Isle of Wight," added Drury. "He feels the time is right to take it on another level."
