Wayne Broadhurst says the time is right to bow out of speedway despite missing out on a winning finish. The Shropshire rider lost his World Indoor Ice title at Telford to Martin Smolinski in the final race on Sunday.
Broadhurst was leading by one point, but fell on the first lap and, despite remounting, was unable to catch the new champion.
"It was a tremendous occasion, and with so many local fans behind me it was very emotional," said Broadhurst.
"A lot of people have been watching me over all the years and to see their faces and to hear all the noise they made meant a lot to me," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.
The new champion from Germany knew he had the crowd to beat.
"It was a great meeting with a brilliant atmosphere," said Smolinski. "And I had to be at my best."
In the team event, England beat The Rest of the World side 40-31.
