Hickman is sixth in the overall standings after four rounds |
Louth's Peter Hickman took his first British Superbike Championship podium finish with second place in race two at Thruxton, in round four of the series. Tyco Honda's Hickman also ran in second place for much of race one but slipped back to fifth in the closing stages. "It's taken a while but I'm made up for the team and everyone who's ever helped me," he told BBC Lincolnshire. Shane Byrne of Louth's HM Plant Honda team extended his overall lead, winning race two and coming third in race one. Byrne started the opener from 33rd and last on the grid after crashing in qualifying but fought his way through the pack in wet conditions, and could have taken second place behind winner Michael Laverty but for a last-corner pass by Michael Rutter. But Byrne made no mistake in race two with a flag-to-flag victory from pole position. Lincoln's Alex Lowes, who put the MSS Colchester Kawasaki on pole position for race one on his debut for the team, came home seventh in the race but crashed without injury in race two while running second. Boston racer and Supersport Championship leader Ben Wilson stretched his lead in the standings with third and fourth for Gearlink Kawasaki in the two races, while Woodhall Spa's Steve Plater suffered a broken arm after a high-speed crash in race two. Plater had earlier finished eighth in the opening Supersport race on board the Padgetts Honda.
