First-round disaster for Knight

Knight is returning to the WEC after two highly successful years in the US

David Knight made a disastrous start to the 2009 World Enduro Championships held in Penafiel, Portugal on Saturday.

Making his much-anticipated return to WEC the BMW Motorrad rider scored just one sixth-place result all weekend.

Knight was unable to perform at his best on either the event's enduro or motocross tests with his only special test wins coming on the extreme test.

"There's not a lot for me to say really - other than I'm obviously hugely disappointed," said Knight

"There's no hiding from the fact that as a team we struggled this weekend."

The event got worse for Knight as early on day two he caught his foot under his bike's rear wheel, and was forced to withdraw from the event.

"I thought I'd done some serious damage to my knee but I think it'll be OK for the next round in Spain," said Knight.

He dominated the WEC Championship in 2005 and 2006 before moving to the United States and winning back-to-back GNCC titles.
