Plug pulled on 2009 ice speedway

Ice speedway has been running in Telford since 1985

Telford Ice Speedway chiefs have cancelled February's big event, ending a run of 23 consecutive shows at the Telford Ice Rink.

An upgrade of plant machinery at the venue means the Rink could not guarantee it would be ready on time.

"If we were to press ahead it would be a big gamble," Ice Speedway founder Graham Drury told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We're very reluctant to do this, but we will be back in 2010 for our 25th anniversary. That'll be some occasion."

Drury has stressed that this will be just one blank year, and that the big event will return to Telford.

"The management at Telford Ice Rink have told us it's only 80% likely the upgrade work will be completed," he said. "So it is with great reluctance that Telford 2009 will not be going ahead.

"I felt a statement was necessary because a lot of fans plan their weekend around Telford and many stay overnight in hotels throughout the area.

"I apologise to all those who are disappointed and look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2010."

Former professional speedway rider Drury was laughed at when he first came up with the concept of racing on ice - but he now takes the sport all over the world.
