Haslam will race for Stiggy Motorsport in World Superbikes in 2009 |
HM Plant Honda's Leon Haslam clinched the runner-up spot in the British Superbike Championships with fourth and second place in Sunday's final round. Both races at Brands Hatch were won by 2008 champion Shane Byrne on a Ducati. Haslam's team-mate in the Louth outfit, Cal Crutchlow, claimed second and fourth place to pip Suzuki's Tom Sykes to third in the standings. Byrne, Haslam and Sykes are all moving to World Superbikes next season, with Crutchlow going to World Supersport. Alford's Peter Hickman, deputising on the Red Viper Honda, was 25th in the first race after having to use the team's spare bike, before just missing out on the points in 16th. | To finish both championships within the top five isn't a bad run for me Ben Wilson reflects on success in Superstock and the R1 Cup |
Woodhall Spa's Steve Plater came home in second in the Supersport race on the AIM Yamaha after a race-long battle with eventual winner and 2008 champion Glen Richards, to claim his fifth podium finish, and fifth overall. He said: "I am not really worried about my championship position although it's nice to have finished fifth overall after only finishing five races." Ruskington's Rob Frost rounded off the series with his best result of the year, finishing fifth for Team Buff Triumph. In Superstock Hickman was denied victory by Steve Brogan by four thousandths of a second, but second place was enough to guarantee him third overall in the championship. Boston racer Ben Wilson pipped Adrian Coates to fifth in the standings after finishing fourth, and Lee Jackson was 10th in the race and eighth overall. Wilson also took second place behind Jon Kirkham in both the R1 Cup race and the championship, and admitted: "To finish both championships within the top five isn't a bad run for me."
