Donald finished in a new race record time. McGuinness, who has claimed 13 TT wins, had set the quickest Superbike speed of the week in Friday night's final practice session. The Honda rider started favourite for Saturday's opener after lapping at 128.61mph in Friday's session. Aussie Donald described his win as "really special". "It was great on the last lap being able to take in what was happening," added Donald. "It means a lot. My father was here last year but I wasn't able to get a win and I'm sure he was listening today." Archibald - who made his TT debut in 1997 - admitted his hard work had paid off after securing his first podium finish for four years. | I am not really sure what happened |
"It is good to be back up on the podium," said Archibald. "I picked up the pieces of the other riders dropping out and just took it easy." Morecambe rider McGuinness - who has 25 podium finishes to his name in his 11-year TT career - insists he will not let his first day failure affect him as he bids for further glory on Monday. "I am not really sure what happened - the bike has been fantastic all week but it just wouldn't fire at the top of the mountain," he said. "But I can't let this affect me too much and I have to make sure everything is sorted for the next race on Monday." Local Manx men Nick Crowe and Mark Cox won Saturday's sidecar race ahead of John Holden and Andrew Winkle. World champions Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance took third in their first appearace in the Isle of Man event but 13-times winner Dave Molyneux retired early on the first lap.
