Smith was named 125cc newcomer of the year in 2006 |
Teenage Briton Bradley Smith says he will not be burdened by the extra public expectation at this weekend's Donington Grand Prix. The lack of a British MotoGP rider or a top 250cc contender means Smith, 16, carries home hopes in the 125cc race.
"Fans go to support British riders but they're also there to see the racing," the Repsol Honda rider told BBC Sport.
"If their sole aim is to watch one person I'm flattered but other people's expectations don't put pressure on me."
Last season's 125cc Rookie of the Year has continued his impressive progress this season, but is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
Smith has just left school, which he says gives him more free time, and he is currently on a training regime which includes 4km of swimming, 110 miles of cycling and 23 miles of running per week.
"It's been a bit of a surprise year with the results I've had," he said.
Third place in France was Smith's best finish so far |
"To be eighth after seven rounds of the championship is something I didn't expect, and to have a podium finish under my belt already (third at the French Grand Prix) is something I never ever expected.
"I've been very fortunate in some races, and worked hard in others - I've had a few too many eighth positions but I've always been fighting with the front group, which is definitely positive, I just need that little bit more."
Although Smith does not set himself targets, he admits his recent success at Le Mans has whetted his appetite for more.
"Some of the trophies I've seen at races would be nice to have on the mantlepiece," he added.
"I'm definitely trying my best but it's a world championship so nothing comes easily.
"Coming third in France was an exceptional weekend, it shows what I can do if everything is perfect.
"But you don't get many like that so you've got to take full advantage when you can."
