Rea named young rider of the year
Jonathan Rea
Jonathan Rea is recovering from a serious knee injury
Jonathan Rea has been awarded the Steve Hislop Memorial Trophy as the best young rider of the year in the British Superbike Championship.

The 19-year-old from Ballyclare finished the series in fourth place on a Red Bull Honda.

The teenager will move up to the main Honda team next year, linking up with 2006 champion Ryuichi Kiyonari.

Rea is recovering from a serious knee injury which will keep him off his bike until at least February.

Rea came off his machine at Mallory Park last month, just a day after a record-breaking triumph at the Sunflower meeting in County Down.

The local rider was unable to attend Wednesday's awards ceremony in Birmingham as he is recovering from surgery on the injured knee.
