Guy Martin's sixth place finish in Sunday's TT Superbike race follows months of practice on the Isle of Man circuit - on a computer game. The larger-than-life Lincolnshire lad has been quick to increase his mountain course knowledge by lapping on the small screen since the game was released earlier this year. "It's a long course and I am still learning where I am going but I want to use every means at my disposal to help me go faster," says Martin, who made his debut on the Island last year. "I also watch a lot of on-board DVDs and I'm picking things up at my own pace.
"When I started out my granny could have pushed it round quicker but I am starting to get on the pace.
"I followed some of the fast guys and tried to learn from them and in my third race ever on the circuit, I lapped at nearly 123mph.
"I may not have a lot of experience but they've just got arms and legs the same as I have, so I don't see why I shouldn't be up with them pretty soon." | Everyone has made me feel very welcome in Ireland |
Despite the obvious dangers of road racing, Martin relishes the challenge posed by navigating the streets and lanes at speeds approaching 190mph. "I like the whole circuit; it's awesome. Barregarrow is great, very fast, and every lap I dare myself to go faster there. "There's nothing like road racing and I don't really like circuits. You can fall asleep very easily. "All the guys who do short circuits wear sunglasses when it's pouring with rain but that's not for me. You never see road racers posing in sunglasses before the start of a race." Martin has been racing on roads since 2003 and has already made a major impact, winning at meetings throughout Britain and Ireland.
He now lives in County Londonderry for much of the summer where his team, Uel Duncan Racing, is based. "I love it over in Ireland. The camaraderie is great in the paddock and everyone has made me feel very welcome."
