Adrian Archibald ran out of petrol with only six miles left |
Bruce Anstey won the Superstock event at the Isle of Man TT on Monday after long-time leader Adrian Archibald ran out of fuel with only six miles left. Archibald was 30 seconds clear of his TAS Suzuki team-mate Anstey when his bike came to a halt on the bungalow section of the course.
At the end, Anstey was 36 seconds clear of Ian Lougher while Ryan Farquhar was a further second back in third.
Jason Griffiths was fourth ahead of Guy Martin, Paul Hunt and Martin Finnegan.
Fermanagh man Richard Britton took eighth place.
Archibald, with clear understatement, said he was "very disappointed" after the race.
"I had ridden a very good race and was a mile in front and to run out of petrol was silly," said the Ballymoney man.
TAS Suzuki team manager Hector Neill blamed himself for the fuel miscalculation which cost Archibald the race.
"You can't see the fuel going in so you count it," said Neill.
"One of us uses a stopwatch and I always just do counting in my head.
"I counted to 19 seconds, thinking that I had tonnes in but it wasn't enough.
"The team boss is taking the rap for this. I'm completely shattered. I can't believe it."
Archibald led by five seconds after the opening lap and, the fastest lap of the race of 126.64mph, extended his advantage to 18 seconds after the second circuit.
The Ballymoney man will hope for better luck in the Supersport race on Monday afternoon.
