Soucek caught the eye of the team with his performances in Formula 2
Formula 1 newcomers Virgin Racing have signed Formula Two champion Andy Soucek of Spain as their test and reserve driver for their debut F1 season. He replaces Alvaro Parente, who lost the job when the Tourism Institute of Portugal backed out of sponsorship. "This offers me a great opportunity to prepare for the F1 environment, which is where my longer-term ambitions lie," said 24-year-old Soucek. "It is exciting to be part of a new structure in such a challenging sport." Soucek will deputise for drivers Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi at all 19 grands prix this year as the newest member of the rebranded Manor team. | 606: DEBATE |
Team principal John Booth has welcomed Soucek's arrival. "He is certainly someone we have been keeping a close eye on as we believe he has a great deal of potential," stated Booth. "He provides the experience we need should he be required to deputise for one of the race drivers at short notice."
