Nelson Piquet has been backed to improve a disappointing set of results in 2009 by Renault's race team manager Steve Nielsen.
The 2006 F1 constructors champions are yet to see the Brazilian score a point this year but Nielsen is optimistic.
"Nelson is still a driver who is quite young in terms of experience," Nielsen told BBC Oxford.
"I think he needs bit more time, and given a bit more time and a better car hopefully he can produce some results."
Piquet's best race finish was 10th in Bahrain while team-mate Fernando Alonso has not finished higher than fifth. Despite room for improvement Nielsen believes both drivers are not lacking self-belief.
Alonso and Piquet have yet to earn a podium finish in 2009
"The drivers' confidence, I think is pretty good still. It would be better if we gave them a faster car and we are endeavouring to do that," added Nielsen.
"If we do then Fernando's confidence will grow and Nelson's confidence will grow."
Renault have been preparing for the short 37-mile journey to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, but Nielsen has said they are under no extra pressure for their home race.
"There is pressure at every race we go to. We don't treat treat it any differently because it's our home race.
"Silverstone has been good. It is our local race, it's on our doorstep. It's a matter of a few minutes to get there for some of the guys who work here. It is a nice place for a race."
