Heidfeld scored six points for Sauber in 2003 |
Jordan have confirmed Nick Heidfeld as one of their two drivers for the 2004 Formula One season. The team are also set to sign Jos Verstappen, even though talks with the Dutchman broke down earlier this week.
Heidfeld, 26, who drove for Sauber last year, said: "I am very happy to sign a deal with Jordan.
Team boss Eddie Jordan said: "Nick is a very quick driver with the talent and experience we need in order to grab every opportunity we can this season."
Heidfeld, who was ditched by Sauber at the end of last season, has already tested with Jordan twice this year.
He added: "The last couple of weeks and months have been quite difficult for me so not only am I happy to be signing, I'm also relieved."
His team-mate, who will fill the last vacant drive in F1, has yet to be decided, but Verstappen is seen by many as favourite.
A Heidfeld-Verstappen pairing means bad news for Britain's Ralph Firman and Allan McNish, who were hoping to figure in Jordan's plans.
Verstappen could be announced before the team's new car is rolled out at Silverstone on Wednesday.
Despite pulling out of negotiations with Jordan, he has nowhere else to go if he wanted to prolong his F1 career.
The team, meanwhile, would welcome the 5m sponsorship the former Arrows and Minardi driver will bring in.
