Ipswich Witches' star Scott Nicholls is backing the campaign |
Former promoter Simon Barton believes a new supporters' group could resurrect the Mildenhall Fen Tigers. Barton is fronting a fans' organisation called Secure Mildenhall Speedway, aimed at trying to get the defunct National League club racing again. He told BBC Radio Suffolk: "We're confident of holding at least one away meeting this season. "Hopefully with the two or three interested parties involved we can find a solution for 2011 as well." The Tigers pulled out of competitive speedway in early August when previous owner Ray Mascall decided he could no longer commit the time or money to running the club. Since then the search for a replacement backer has failed to come up trumps. | It would be devastating for me personally and I know for hundreds of other people that love their speedway at West Row Ex-Mildenhall promoter Simon Barton |
Barton, who was a Mildenhall promoter between 2007 and 2008, hopes SMS can make a difference by raising funds as well as the club's profile, and says the prospect of losing speedway in the Suffolk town is unthinkable. "It would be devastating for me personally and I know for hundreds of other people that love their speedway at West Row," he said. "It's a fantastic circuit and it would be such a shame to see it close." The group will be trying to raise funds to redeploy the club at a dog track meeting on 3 September at the Mildenhall Stadium.
