Swindon Robins win Knockout Cup tie after protest

Swindon Robins beat Peterborough 49-41 in the Knockout Cup after making an official protest before the match.

Peterborough rider Troy Batchelor had been given permission to miss out as he is riding in Hungary on Saturday.

But Swindon manager Ronnie Russell said this gave their opponents an unfair advantage as they were able to bring in guest riders to strengthen their side.

"We feel that formally protesting is the right thing to have done," Russell told BBC Wiltshire.

Swindon complained because two of their riders, Mads Korneliussen and Morten Risager, are taking part in the same World Championship qualifying meeting in Hungary - yet they both appeared for their club against Peterborough.

I have nothing but admiration and praise for all seven of them. Everyone has done something tonight that made me proud of them

"It wasn't just throwing our toys out of the pram or anything like that. [The protest] was made in the interests of speedway."

Russell may have been unhappy about Peterborough's new-look side at The Abbey Stadium but he was delighted by his team's response.

"Despite riding under protest, we went out on the track and performed professionally throughout and I was very pleased with the way the boys rode."

Polish youngster Grzegorz Zengota top-scored for the Robins with 13 points and was ably supported by captain Leigh Adams (11), while Kenneth Bjerre led the way with a 13-point haul for Peterborough.

"Every heat was just so tough but they really did dig their heels in and rode their hearts out for themselves, but more so for this club," added Russell.

"I have nothing but admiration and praise for all seven of them. Everyone has done something tonight that made me proud of them."
