Veteran Aussie Steve Johnston led the Brummies to victory |
Birmingham made light of their injury problems with a comfortable victory over Sheffield in the Knockout Cup. Despite the absence of Chris Kerr (broken leg) and Jake Anderson (shoulder and elbow) they won 54-36 at Owlerton, 117-61 on aggregate. Steve Johnston made a timely return to form for the Brummies, leading all scorers with 13 points. Justin Sedgmen and Richard Sweetman also took on extra rides to register 12 points apiece. Young Dudley Heathens rider Tom Perry stepped in at reserve for Anderson and chalked up a couple of points while gaining invaluable experience. Paul Cooper and Josh Auty top-scored for Sheffield with eight each, Ricky Ashworth adding seven.
