Brummies future is in the balance

Birmingham Brummies
The Brummies face Edinburgh Monarchs at Perry Barr on Wednesday

The future of the Birmingham Brummies is in doubt after council officers said speedway at Perry Barr should be stopped because it is too noisy.

The club's three-year permission to race at the venue expires next month and Birmingham City Council will decide whether to extend it on Thursday.

Planning and environmental health officers say the noise is affecting the quality of lives of residents.

Speedway returned to the city in 2006 after a gap of more than 20 years.

Brummies owner Tony Mole said the club's future was now in the balance.

We have bent over backwards to work with the community

"Over the last three seasons we have brought a lot of enjoyment to people of all ages," he said.

"We have also brought success to the city and we have never been any trouble to our neighbours. In fact, we have bent over backwards to work with the community.

"We have great support, a fine stadium and a team looking set for a top-two Premier League finish.

"Naturally I am still hoping for a positive outcome on Thursday, but the recommendation of refusal came as a surprise to me, I must admit."

Birmingham City University has also objected to an extension saying the noise is affecting students' studies.

The decision will be made by the city council's planning committee.
