Dunlop delighted with first TT win

Michael Dunlop clinched his first Isle of Man TT triumph in emphatic fashion as he led all the way in Wednesday's Supersport race on the island.

Dunlop's win maintained his family's proud tradition at the TT after his late father Robert's five wins and his late uncle Joey's record 26 triumphs.

The Street Sweep Yamaha rider mastered the mixed conditions of wet and dry to win by 31 seconds from Bruce Anstey.

Conor Cummins took third ahead of Steve Plater, Ian Hutchinson and Ian Lougher.

Dunlop set the fastest lap of the race on his final circuit of the rain-delayed race with a mark of 125.07mph.

The Ballymoney rider led by 10 seconds after lap one and his advantage was increased to 14 seconds at the halfway point.

Dunlop stretched his lead to 24 seconds after the penultimate lap and he continued his extend his advantage in the closing stages on as he posted the fastest circuit of the race.

The Northern Irishman's victory meant that the Dunlop name was on top of the podium at the TT for the first time since 2000, when Joey clinched three triumphs.

Robert Dunlop's final success on the Isle of Man came in 1998 when he won the lightweight class.

"I was riding my spare bike but it was awesome," said Dunlop after his victory on Wednesday.

"My dad gave me the circuit knowledge and I used that. It was wet in places but I went as quickly as I could."

Dunlop said that he had considered quitting the meeting after a poor start to the week when he failed to finish the first three races on the 37.73-mile mountain circuit.

"With what had happened at the start of the week I just wanted to go home really," said Dunlop.

"The week had just been a disaster with three races and no finishes.

"That's the Isle of Man for you - you love the place and then you hate the place in the same day.

"But to get the win after such a bad week was just fantastic.

"The team has worked really hard all week with all the different problems we have had and we'll have a few drinks tonight that's for sure."

Anstey, took his first podium finish of the week having failed to finish the first three races, while Cummins earned his first appearance on the TT podium.
