Portadown man Adam Carroll clinched the A1GP title after winning the sprint and feature races in Sunday's final round of the series at Brands Hatch. The Team Ireland driver went into the weekend with a two-point advantage and the margin was increased to eight after he won the morning sprint race. Carroll only needed sixth in the feature event to clinch the title but he dominated the race to take victory. The 26-year-old is holding talks about a possible Formula 1 drive next year. The Northern Irishman clinched pole on Saturday for both the feature and sprint races at Brands. Carroll finished seven seconds ahead of Mexico in the morning sprint event with Mexico in third. From pole, Carroll made a perfect start in the feature race to lead after the first corner and while the safety car had to come out on lap four, Carroll led the Netherlands by seven seconds after the first round of pit stops. Carroll was still 7.4 seconds clear after the second set of pit stops and the margin was over 10 seconds from Holland's Jeroen Bleekemolen as he took the chequered flag after 50 laps.  | It was a perfect weekend for us |
Switzerland's Neel Jani, Carroll's closest rival going into the final round of the series, took third ahead of Monaco, Portugal, Mexico, Britain and Australia. The Mexican round on 24 May was to have been the climax of the championship but it has been scrapped because of the swine flu outbreak. Carroll had five wins, six podium places and six pole positions in this year's series as he finished 17 points ahead of the Swiss defending champion. Carroll was elated to have delivered his team their first title. "It was a perfect weekend for us," he said. "We did what we wanted to do. The plan was to come here and win both races from pole. "We proved we are too hard to beat. It could not have worked out any better and the momentum we had coming here was fantastic. "Now it is time for us to relax and enjoy it."
