Castroneves now leads by eight points with three races left |
Brazilian Helio Castroneves returned to the top of the Indy Racing League standings with victory in the Indy 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The two-time Indy 500 winner held off a late surge from compatriot Vitor Meira to claim his fourth victory this season and 11th of his career.
He reclaimed the lead in the standings from reigning Indy 500 winner, Marlboro Team Penske team-mate Sam Hornish Jr.
Reigning series champion, England's Dan Wheldon, finished third.
Castroneves won three of the first six races this season and was clearly the dominant driver in the series over that stretch.
But Hornish won back-to-back races at Kansas and Richmond and entered Sunday's event with a 20-point lead in the standings.
However, Hornish's engine overheated on lap 60, ending his day.
Castroneves is now eight points ahead of Hornish with just three races remaining.
