Wilson praised his team's engineers and strategy |
England's Justin Wilson secured his first Champ Car victory of the season at the Edmonton Grand Prix in Canada. Wilson passed Sebastien Bourdais midway through the race to set himself up to take his third career win.
The 27-year-old saw the race restarted with 16 laps to go, but moved clear once the action got going again to beat Bourdais to the line by 5.319 seconds.
In the rival Indy Racing League, Brazilian Tony Kanaan won the AJ Foyt 225 at the Milwaukee Mile.
Wilson said: "My car was just awesome all day and it was a great strategy by my engineers.
"It allowed me to run hard and catch Sebastien, then he made a mistake and I was able to get past him."
Frenchman Bourdais, who won the first four races of the season, heads goes to San Jose, California, for next week's event leading Wilson by 23 points.
AJ Allmendinger, who came into Sunday with a three-race winning streak, ran a strong race to finish third. He was followed by Oriol Servia, Paul Tracy and rookie Will Power.
Kanaan's victory ended the domination of Team Penske and Ganassi Racing and gave Andretti Green their first win of the season.
Penske driver Sam Hornish finished second and retained the lead in the drivers' standings. South African Tomas Scheckter was third for Vision Racing.
