Wheldon is the first Englishman to win Indy since Graham Hill in 1966 |
Dan Wheldon begins the defence of his Indianapolis 500 crown when day one of qualifying takes place on Saturday, with the race itself on 28 May. Wheldon has moved to the Ganassi Racing team this season, and although he is second in the IRL standings he admitted there have been some teething troubles.
"The first few races, I don't think we have performed to our full potential.
"I think we have let some results slip that could have been better," said the 27-year-old Englishman.
"But I am very happy with the way in which this team performs and the motivation to win is exceptional - they obviously have a lot of desire to win."
Last year, Wheldon started from row six on the grid but he is confident he has a chance to claim pole position this time around.
"Hopefully, we can make some strides forward with the car again. We are definitely within a shout of shooting for the pole," he said.
"Then, after that, we can start working very hard on the race car.
"I do feel, even though we are not to our full potential, we still have the capability to win.
"With the extra testing you get in the month, that's a good time to focus and be disciplined in your approach, so that you can relay exactly what you need so that you get what you want from the car."
Qualifying takes place over fours days, with pole being settled on the first day of qualifying on 20 May, when places 1-11 are up for grabs.
