US veteran Sam Hornish edged Penske Racing teammate Helio Castroneves to capture pole position for Saturday's Indy Challenge in Richmond, Virginia. Hornish clocked 176.244 mph around the half-mile oval to take his second pole of the season.
Brazilian Castroneves, second at 175.797, was folllowed by American Ryan Brisco in third and Canada's Patrick Carpentier in fourth.
England's Dan Wheldon, the championship leader, was seventh.
