Britain's Dan Wheldon became the first driver in Indy Racing League history to win three of the first four events by winning the Indy Japan 300 title. The Andretti Green driver took the lead on the 198th lap of 200 when Tomas Scheckter's Pennzoil Panther car ran out of fuel on the front stretch.
Delphi's Scott Sharp was second with Rahal Letterman's Buddy Rice third.
Wheldon stretched his overall lead over 7-Eleven's Tony Kanaan to 46 points, with Marlboro's Sam Hornish in third.
His Andretti Green team-mate and fellow Briton Dario Franchitti had an accident on lap 123.
"I'm very proud to have won this race," said Wheldon, who won the event last year.
"It was a difficult race. You had to watch your fuel level after the 140th lap and keep an eye on your tires."
Danica Patrick, Indy Racing's only female driver this season, had a best-ever fourth place.
