McRae did not finish stage nine but can carry on |
Colin McRae is still in the Dakar Rally after beating the deadline to reach a checkpoint in Burkina Faso. McRae's race looked to be over after he failed to finish stage nine, only for stages 10 and 11 to be cancelled amid security fears.
That threw the rally into chaos, and organisers said anyone who arrived in the town of Bobo-Dioulasso by 1800 local time was still in the race.
McRae reached the town at 1524 local time, and is now 41st out of 69 cars.
The 1995 World Rally champion's victory hopes had effectively been ended when he lost his four-wheel drive last Thursday, and gearbox problems on his Nissan struck again on Friday.
He finally cleared stage nine on Sunday afternoon and had to drive 1,500 kilometres from Nema to Bobo-Dioulasso.
All competitors finishing stage after 1930 local time on Saturday were given a stage time of 21 hours, 12 hours behind that of the stage winner.
The rally resumes on Tuesday with competitors covering 650km, including a 213km competitive stage.
France's Stephane Peterhansel is currently leading the race.
