Burton masters conditions

Ward Burton collects his first win since the opening race of the Nascar season at the New England 300.

Jan Magnussen takes his Panoz, co-driven by David Brabham, to a shock victory in the American Le Mans Series in Washington.

Former Grand Prix driver Tomas Enge puts himself in the thick of the battle for the Formula 3000 championship with a victory in France.

Robbie Kerr takes the lead in the British Formula Three Championship with a win at Rockingham.

Ward Burton, stuck in a miserable slump since winning the Daytona 500, overcame hazardous track conditions and a late caution to win the New England 300 on Sunday.

Burton, who had just two other top 10 finishes since winning the season's first race, passed Matt Kenseth for the lead with 10 laps to go then held off Jeff Green by 3.230 seconds at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Dale Jarrett finished third, followed by Rusty Wallace, rookie Ryan Newman, Todd Bodine, Robby Gordon, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Elliott Sadler.

Dale Earnhardt Jr brought out the yellow when he tried to move Todd Bodine's car with slight contact and instead went spinning down the track, onto the grass and into the retaining wall.

The field was bunched back up and Burton, in second on the restart with 12 laps to go, easily got by Kenseth two laps later.

He went unchallenged for the victory the rest of the way in a race marred by poor track conditions.

Panoz Motorsports caused a major upset by claming victory in the Washington leg of the American Le Mans Series.

The LMP1 roadster driven by former Grand Prix drivers Jan Magnussen and David Brabham finished ahead of Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello's number two Audi.

The number one Audi, driven by Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro, came in third.

Britain's Johnny Herbert and co-driver Stefan Johansson's hopes of regaining the lead in the Series were scuppered as they could only manage fifth in their Audi.

Czech Tomas Enge has closed in on Formula 3000 championship leader Sebastian Bourdais with his second victory in a row.

The former Grand Prix driver held off the Frenchman to win the latest round of the series at Magny-Cours on Saturday - his third victory this year.

Enge is now just five points behind Bourdais with four races to go.

Enge started from pole and held off a determined challenge from his rival on the first lap before establishing himself in the lead.

Bourdais stayed with Enge, but could not get close enough to pass, even when Enge's car developed a misfire towards the end of the race.

Results from Formula 3000 race at Magny-Cours:

1 Tomas Enge (Cze)
2 Sebastien Bourdais (Fra)
3 Giorgio Pantano (Ita)
4 Antonio Pizzonia (Bra)
5 Mario Haberfeld (Bra)
6 Enrico Toccacelo (Ita)

Robbie Kerr overtook James Courtney at the top of the British Formula Three Championship leaderboard after winning the second race at Rockingham.

Title rival Courtney was forced to miss the meeting after suffering concussion in a crash during testing.

Kerr manoevred his Alan Docking Racing machine into the lead on the ninth lap, overtaking Heikki Kovalainen on the outside.

"Heikki made a brilliant start and got ahead," said Kerr.

"I just had to get my head down because I knew I could catch him. I was quicker through the chicane, so I managed to get around the outside of him at the hairpin."

In the first race, there was surprise victory for Japan's Shinya Hosokawa, his first win in F3.
