Weale's individual silver rounded off a good weekend for Great Britain

Sam Weale has become the first British man to win an individual medal at the Modern Pentathlon European Championships.

His silver medal in Hungary follows the bronze won by Britain's women team.

The 28-year-old, based at the University of Bath, rose from seventh to second with a superb run and shoot.

"I felt a foot taller and there was a real spring in my step when I crossed the line," said the world number 25, who came 10th at the Beijing Olympics.

Weale added that he was "annoyed" with his performance in the riding, knocking down two fences, but always believed he could turn things around.

"Going into the combined event I thought potentially I was in the running for a medal," he reflected.

"I felt quite confident, but it was a bit of surprise and a relief. It's my first European or World Championship medal, hopefully there will be many more medals to come".
