Fell finished as the highest-placed Briton in Hungary

Great Britain's women took team bronze at the Modern Pentathlon European Championships in Hungary as Germany won gold with the hosts clinching silver.

The British trio of Mhairi Spence, Katy Livingston and Heather Fell finished third after Fell repaid the faith of selectors as she regained her form.

Fell, 27, produced a strong run/shoot to rise from 12th to sixth in the individual competition.

The Olympic silver medallist from Devon had struggled earlier in the season.

Fell scored 5244 points in the individual competition where France's Amelie Caze (5400), German Olympic champion Lena Schoneborn (5392) and Lithuanian Donata Rimsaite (5352) filled the first three places.

Britain's Spence was eighth on 5196, while compatriots Helyer (5092) and Livingston (5024) finished 15th and 20th respectively.

Although Helyer scored better than Livingston, teams have to say in advance which three athletes will be nominated for scoring purposes.

Fell was 24th at the most recent World Cup event in Berlin at the start of June and said her performances had been affected by hay fever.

But she bounced back in Debrecen, faring best of the Brits as she finishing ninth in the run/shoot in a time of 13:04.20.

Britain's Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge will compete in the men's final on Sunday.
