Cornish teenager Declan Byrne has been picked for the British judo team to compete at the European Cadets Championships in the Czech Republic.

The 15-year-old, who is a member of Polkyth Judo Club, first made the national squad during trials in March.

Byrne subsequently impressed at last month's European Cup in Poland where he finished a very respectable fifth in the under-66kg category.

The European Cadets Championships are being held on 25-26 June.

Byrne's mother, Vannessa Byrne, said her son is hoping to improve even further in the Czech Republic.

She said: "Declan is very much looking forward to the event and it's a great achievement for him just to be competing there.

"We're in a remote area but the club has good numbers and Declan is a big part of Polkyth Judo Club."
