Bryant was the only member of the 14-strong GB squad to win a medal |
Karina Bryant has claimed Britain's sole medal at the World Judo Championships after taking silver in the +78kg category. The 30-year-old, who was only a late addition to the squad, lost to reigning world champion Tong Wen of China. "I feel great. I had a good year because I didn't expect to be here. I'm very happy," said the Surrey fighter. Cuba's Idalis Ortiz Boucurt and Maki Tsukada of Japan took bronze, but Tong won gold for the fifth time running. The closest any other member of Britain's squad came to a medal was Sally Conway, who lost out in the bronze medal play-off against Japan's Mina Watanabe. Japan finished at the top of the medal table with three golds, one silver and three bronzes, but their men's team failed to win a title for the first time in 59 years.
