| Tuesday, 14 May, 2002, 11:37 GMT 12:37 UK Another delay for Wembley The Wembley debacle is still no closer to being resolved The plans to rebuild Wembley Stadium have hit another snag, after a sitting of a House of Commons select committee was postponed. The committee, chaired by Gerald Kaufman, was due to meet on Tuesday to discuss a report by corporate trouble-shooter David James about the way Wembley National Stadium Limited (WNSL) was managed up to September 2000. The powerful committee of backbench MPs is keen to make the findings of the report public - but WNSL is strongly opposed to the move. Although the report did not uncover any criminal activity, it raised concerns about WNSL and the way building contracts were awarded. WNSL is believed to want to keep the report private because it does not want to discourage WestLB, the German bank that has provisionally agreed to fund the long-delayed 715m project. But Kaufman, known to be furious about the handling of the Wembley issue, is expected to take steps in Parliament if WNSL continues to block publication. The Labour MP has given WNSL seven days to agree to the report's publication or risk the select committee publishing it under parliamentary privilege. If that were to happen, any individuals or organisations named in the report would not be able to take legal action. |
