The never-ending story
FA chief Adam Crozier and Sport England boss Trevor Brooking speak at a media conference on Wednesday
The FA's announcement simply prolonged the saga
By BBC sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar

Just when you thought it was all over... the Wembley sledge slides onwards.

We'll now be back to do it all again in April.

That will be when time runs out of the three month period of "due diligence" as the financial promises are poured over by the lawyers and the construction deadlines are given a reality check.

Due diligence is really rather an apt phrase.

An artists impression of the new Wembley
Will the dream become reality?

If only there had been a bit before, we might never have got into this situation.

Perhaps if someone had examined the advice given to Chris Smith about sightlines before he chucked athletics out of the original plan, we might be nearly ready for the grand opening now.

But as the FA rather neatly put it, "we are where we are". Still waiting.

Still examining the processes, still talking about Wembley perhaps not being built.

If there are parallels elsewhere to this story I would be surprised.

Never in the field of stadium construction has so much been interfered with by so few.

There is now a tangible sense of story fatigue setting in among the journalist fraternity.

Let's just get on with it and get it over with.

A bit like going to the dentist for root-canal work.

See you in the spring.
