| Donald Bradman factfile Australian icon: Bradman pictured in 1988 Statistics never tell the whole story about any sporting great, but Sir Donald Bradman amassed an incomparable record at the crease. 1908 - born 27 August in Yeo Yeo, New South Wales. 1927 - makes Test debut against England in Brisbane, aged 20. 1929 - scores first century against England, 112 at Melbourne, and followed up with 123 in the second innings. 1930 - scores a record 974 runs in a single series against England, including 334 at Headingley, 254 at Lord's and 232 at The Oval.
1931 - launches his talents on South Africa, battering them for 806 runs in a home series at an average of over 200. 1932 - restricted by Douglas Jardine's controversial 'Bodyline' tactics, limiting him to an average of 'only' 56.57 in Test series against England. 1934 - involved in a world record stand of 451 with Bill Ponsford for the second wicket at The Oval, which was to stand for 60 years. Also scored second triple century in as many visits to Headingley, this time collecting 304. A fourth wicket partnership with Ponsford nets 388. 1936 - Appointed Australian captain. 1937 - Scores 810 runs in a home series against England, a record for either side which still stands. 1948 - Skippers an Australian side widely regarded as the greatest Test side ever on their tour to England, scoring centuries at Trent Bridge and Headingley. Out for a duck in his 52nd and final Test innings against England at The Oval, leaving him with a career Test average of 99.94, having scored 6,996 runs in 80 innings. Bradman still holds five partnership records for Australia, including 451 with Bill Ponsford at The Oval in 1934 which is the highest ever recorded by his country. |
