Road to Lord's: Surrey
Surrey
Surrey have gained momentum on route to Lord's
How they got there: Surrey

Group stage

No result against Middlesex

Rain dogged the South Group and only 35 overs were possible of Surrey's opening encounter against Middlesex.

In that time Ian Ward had put Surrey in a promising position. The soon-to-be England opener was 71 not out as Surrey reached 146 for two.

No result against Sussex

Not one ball was bowled as Sussex's visit to the Oval was abandoned with each side taking a point.

Beat Hampshire by 23 runs

Surrey survived a few alarms on a slow Rise Bowl pitch that made scoring difficult.

Adam Hollioake

The visitors started well and reached 96 for two at one stage with Mark Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe each set.

But both fell to Shaun Udal and it needed brisk cameos from Alistair Brown and Alex Tudor to lift them to a defendable 194 all out.

At 92 for three, Hampshire were well placed. But Ben Hollioake took three wickets and brother Adam two as the home side finished well short on 171 for nine.

Beat Essex by 6 wickets

When Stuart Law and Nasser Hussain were hurrying Essex to 114 for one, Surrey looked set for a 'big ask', as Law would say.

But the Australian slapped a long hop from Ian Salisbury to mid on and Surrey were never again in trouble.

Hussain made 63 before Adam Hollioake hurried through the rest with four wickets as Essex reached 222 for eight.

A second-wicket stand of 151 between Alec Stewart (59) and Mark Ramprakash (97 not out) settled the outcome as Surrey reached 223 for four with three overs to spare.

Lost to Kent by 1 run

Despite a first defeat, Surrey still advanced to the last eight as group runners-up.

They lost by the narrowest of margins when James Golding trapped last man Ed Giddins LBW with the first ball of the last over.

Kent's 265 for nine was based on a solid start followed by Paul Nixon's late flourish. Nixon hit an unbeaten 65 from 55 balls.

Stewart's 92 in 97 balls put Surrey on course, but they lost wickets regularly.

Ben Hollioake hit out to make 50 in 45 balls to take Surrey to the brink. They fell just short but it was not to matter.

Quarter final

Beat Sussex by 53 runs

Mark Ramprakash
Ramprakash: Consistent contributor
Surrey gathered momentum with victory over Sussex at Hove.

Brown batted throughout their innings to reach 108 and lift Surrey to 239 for seven. The consistent Ramprakash contributed 53 after Stewart had fallen first ball.

Sussex struggled early on but recovered to 138 for two.

Then Tudor bowled the dangerous Chris Adams and Sussex collapsed.

They lost their remaining eight wickets 48 and Surrey were into the last four.

Semi final

Beat Nottinghamshire by 174 runs

An awesome performance took Surrey to Lord's as Notts were overwhelmed from start to the then inevitable early finish.

Mark Butcher

Even without the injured Thorpe and Ramprakash, Surrey were just too strong.

On a typically true Oval surface, their top six all contributed in blistering fashion.

Mark Butcher (84) and Ian Ward (58) set the tone with an opening stand of 112. Stewart, Brown and Ben Hollioake completed the rout as Surrey amassed a massive 361 for eight.

Faced with such a daunting task Notts collapsed and only the immaculate Kevin Pietersen (78 not out) prevented complete annihilation.
