| Saturday, 14 July, 2001, 17:03 GMT 18:03 UK Pakistan consider Medlycott approach Medlycott (left) with Surrey captain Adam Hollioake Pakistan are hoping to sound out Surrey manager Keith Medlycott with a view to him becoming the new coach of their national team. Medlycott and former South African captain Kepler Wessels were named as potential targets by Ramiz Raja, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board development committee. They are looking for a new coach after Richard Pybus declined an offer to carry on for another two years. "Due to international commitments, people like South African BArry Richards and England's Geoff Boycott are busy, so we will have to look at the available options, " the Agence France Presse quoted Raja as saying.
"Boycott is real coaching material but we want to utilise his experience in our academies." Medlycott played for Surrey for seven seasons before joining the coaching staff at The Oval. He helped them to their first County Championship title for 28 years in 1999, a feat they repeated last summer as well as winning promotion from Division Two of the one-day National League. The 36-year-old never played Test cricket although he was chosen in the England squad to tour the West Indies in 1990. Wessels is a seasoned international campaigner, who first played Test cricket for Australia during South Africa's international exile before returning home to captain the national side. Wessels has a job with a security firm in South Africa and is also involved in media work. | See also: 12 Jul 01 | B and H Cup Final 11 Jul 01 | Middlesex 09 Jul 01 | Cricket Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Cricket stories now: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
